Abstract What were the direct impacts of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon (DH) oil spill on the Gulf sheries industry? This paper reports results from an ex-post analysis of the spill using publicly available, routinely collected data on landings, revenues, and shing eort for select sh species in the Gulf. Our methods examine the overall impact of the oil spill as well as changes that occurred over time. A key contribution of our work is that it goes beyond simple pre-post analysis and applies various identication strategies that have been developed in the econometric literature, in order to identify the causal eects of the spill. Nevertheless, the limitations of the data preclude many strategies. Investigation of the short and longer term dynamics of the Gulf sheries has important implications for understanding the resilience of Gulf communities in the face of large-scale environmental events like DH. The dynamic path of certain indicators, such as sheries landings and revenues, can provide information about the resilience of sheries to oil spill events at the sectoral level, aggregating the various physical, policy, and behavioral responses that combine to form the latent resilience construct. These interim ndings …

Potential Impact of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill on Commercial Fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico
Given the economic and social importance of fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico large marine ecosystem (LME), it is imperative to quantify the potential impacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. To provide a preliminary perspective of the consequences of this disaster, spatial databases of annual reported commercial catch and landed value prior to the spill were investigated relative to the locat...
متن کاملImpacts of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill evaluated using an end-to-end ecosystem model
We use a spatially explicit biogeochemical end-to-end ecosystem model, Atlantis, to simulate impacts from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and subsequent recovery of fish guilds. Dose-response relationships with expected oil concentrations were utilized to estimate the impact on fish growth and mortality rates. We also examine the effects of fisheries closures and impacts on recruitment. We vali...
متن کاملA Review of Seafood Safety after the Deepwater Horizon Blowout
BACKGROUND The Deepwater Horizon (DH) blowout resulted in fisheries closings across the Gulf of Mexico. Federal agencies, in collaboration with impacted Gulf states, developed a protocol to determine when it is safe to reopen fisheries based on sensory and chemical analyses of seafood. All federal waters have been reopened, yet concerns have been raised regarding the robustness of the protocol ...
متن کاملThe GuLF STUDY: A Prospective Study of Persons Involved in the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Response and Clean-Up
BACKGROUND The 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster led to the largest ever marine oil spill. Individuals who worked on the spill were exposed to toxicants and stressors that could lead to adverse effects. OBJECTIVES The GuLF STUDY was designed to investigate relationships between oil spill exposures and multiple potential physical and mental health effects. METHODS Participants were recruited b...
متن کاملLouisiana State of Mind: Women’s Mental Health after the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill
Studies of several different oil spill disasters have shown that the people affected by these disasters can suffer adverse mental health and behavioral effects. But does the psychological impact of this kind of event differ among subgroups of the affected population? A new study explores that question by looking at how the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010 specifically impacted women’s mental...
